This vs. That: Meaty Bones vs. Chunks

Two paths to chewing satisfaction—what’s the difference?

When you browse our website, you’ll notice a variety of bone-in options—from Meaty Beef Bones to Lamb Chunks to Pork Chunks and beyond.

They all add texture, enrichment, and variety to your carnivore’s bowl.
But what’s the difference between meaty bones and chunks—and where do they fit in your pet’s raw diet?

Let’s break it down. 🐾

First Up: What Are Meaty Bones?

Meaty bones are exactly what they sound like—generous cuts of bone with a good amount of meat still attached.

  • Think ribs, spines, or necks—larger sections that offer both chewing satisfaction and nutrient density.
  • Depending on your pet’s size, age, and chewing style, meaty bones can be edible or recreational.
  • Great for jaw exercise, mental stimulation, and natural teeth cleaning.
  • They can also be used in homemade raw meals—or for making a nourishing bone broth. (Don't feed the bones if you cook them in the broth!)

At My Pet Carnivore, we offer meaty bones in single proteins like:

Now, What Are Chunks?

Chunks are a bit more varied—and a whole lot of fun!

  • These are smaller, bone-in pieces of meat—typically fist-sized or smaller.
  • They often include a mix of cuts, like muscle meat, bones, and sometimes organs (heart, kidney, spleen, liver, even tongue or lung).
  • It’s a bit of a grab bag of goodness—you never know exactly what you’ll get, but it’s always packed with raw variety.

Chunks can be:

  • Fed as a meal component or as chews
  • A great way to boost texture, variety, and interest in the bowl
  • Used as-is, or repurposed in DIY raw feeding and broth-making (don't feed cooked bones!)

Current favorites include:

So, What’s the Difference?

Feature Meaty Bones Chunks
Size Large sections (ribs, spine, neck) Fist-sized or smaller
Content Bone + muscle meat Bone + meat + possible organs
Use Chewing, broth, raw meals Broth, enrichment, raw meals
Texture Great for jaw exercise Great for variety
Organ content Usually none May include “gooey bits” (organs)

Which Should You Choose?

Why not both?

Meaty bones are ideal for larger, experienced chewers and can serve as edible or recreational bones depending on the size and density. They’re a great way to work those jaws and clean those teeth.

Chunks are great for dogs and cats who enjoy variety, texture, and a more balanced bite-sized option. They offer a mix of nutrition and enrichment in every bag.

Use them to:

  • Make a balanced homemade raw meal
  • Add variety to a whole grind or PMR bowl
  • Craft your own bone broth (just remember: never cook bones and feed them!)

Our Takeaway

  • Meaty Bones = Big, bold, bone-in sections for chewing and jaw work.
  • Chunks = Mixed meat, bone, and organ pieces for variety and enrichment.

Both are fantastic tools in your raw feeding toolbox—whether you’re building meals from scratch or just looking to boost texture and satisfaction in the bowl.
